About

My photo
Justine Apple
Justine has studied art since she was a child growing up in Johannesburg, South Africa. She received her BFA from York University, majoring in painting, drawing, and graphic design. Justine works mainly in acrylics, conte crayon, and charcoal to produce vibrant, expressive abstracts. Her works are inspired by the myriad of sights and sounds in her environment, as well as the emotions that resonate from her instrumental piano compositions in her CD “Passages” (2009). Justine’s artistic influences include Kandinsky, Chagall, Miro, Modigliani, and Mondrian. Justine has exhibited her paintings in art festivals, galleries, and restaurants around Toronto, including the Annex Patio Art Festival, Dimensions Custom Framing & Gallery, Gallery Hi Art, Marlowe Restaurant and Wine Bar, Slacks Bar and Grill, Lola’s Commissary, Starbucks, and most recently, Mitzi's Cafe on Queen West. Justine lives and works in Toronto. To view her artwork, please visit her website at www.applejarts.com. Justine can be contacted at info@applejarts.com. Why the title "Transformation"?

Simple. The work started off as a warm piece - reds, oranges, yellows, and green. Struggling for 2 weeks to resolve compositional elements within the piece, Justine had this great idea to refresh the work with her favourite cool colour - blue. And so began the morphing of the artwork from a a slightly contrived still life into a gestural, free-flowing, literally hand-painted ocean of blue tones.....a transformation.

Spicing up her paintings

Justine spices up her paintings with texture. She creates this using paintbrushes, palette knives, her fingers, and gel mediums. For a great example of texture in her work, check out "Red" (2009). Viewers are drawn to the depth and richness created by this exciting element of design.
